Nestled away in the heart of southern Dallas sits a Freedman's town with emergent wetlands, acres of grassland and several lakes. Joppee's Wildlife is home to various mammals, various species of birds, fish, amphibians and macro-invertebrates as last reported by The Corp of Engineers.
Because of such a vast ecosystem, Joppee Wildlife Institute 501c3 has began to study and implement ways of Enhancement and Recreation as well as how to achieve some Sustainable Development Goals such as, Clean Water, Sanitation and a Sustainable Community along with Creation of Jobs.
JWI is committed to the vision of past and present leaders of the Joppee Community in seeing the resilient 150 year old Freedman's town become self reliant by taking advantage of the ecosystem in Joppee that has been naturally preserved for such a time as this.
Research will allow the study of our wildlife species in their natural habitat, and through research and study we will also learn of historical changes in climate and vegetation over the years.
Why? Because, wildlife enriches food production by serving as agents of pollination as well as ensuring JWI is pollination friendly. Pollination is essential for plant reproduction and vital to maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Some native plants are major sources of medications, such as pain relievers, heart medications, inflammation etc. Reports have further shown that people who spend time in outdoor environments are less likely to suffer from stress.
Joppee Wildlife Institute founder Yolander Thomas is a 3rd generation native of Joppee with a passion to bring changes to this former hidden gem. Because of the intentionality she witness from her grandmother Rosa Lee Bosh Jackson, who was the 1st woman to owned several homes in Joppee dating back to the early 50’s, JWI is committed to being that change we want to see.
The lakefront trail will provide a scenic view of the lake, with several access points for fishing. This trail will be ideal for walking, running, bicyclists, and anyone who enjoys the beauty of nature.
An Amphitheater will provide shared community experience, strengthen tourism and create opportunities for local economy.
